THE POSITION:

The Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) seeks a Senior Communications Representative to develop and implement communications and public awareness initiatives that elevate the voices of underrepresented or marginalized communities while supporting and advancing BES’ mission to protect public health and the environment.

Every resident, business, industry, and visitor relies on our services every hour of every day. We have more than 600 employees who operate, maintain, plan, and improve all aspects of the city’s wastewater and stormwater systems to protect public health and restore the health of Portland’s rivers, streams, and watersheds. TO QUALIFY:

Applicants should specifically address and demonstrate in their cover letter and résumé how their education, training, and/or experience meet each of the following minimum qualifications:   
  

  1. Experience in the principles applied in the design and implementation of strategic communications, public affairs, media, marketing, and public participation. 
  2. Experience developing and implementing communications plans or public awareness campaigns focused on elevating voices from historically underrepresented or marginalized communities.
  3. Experience working with the media including developing and implementing media plans, responding to media requests, and serving as a spokesperson for an organization or agency.
  4. Experience in social media/digital marketing. 
  5. Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders including representatives of other government agencies, business, and community leaders and/or members of the media.
